The house standing here near Ringgold, Georgia was built in 1918, but the man associated with it died on the ground a long time before that. He was a Union officer, and he is known simply as Captain.

He keeps to the front of the property and the front rooms of the house.

What he does depends entirely on what he makes of you. If he likes the people living there, he shows himself by performing parlour tricks. If he dislikes a visitor, he frightens them.

That is one of the few accounts in this archive of something with preferences, and the residents apparently regard being liked by him as a good outcome.

The location explains the uniform. Ringgold sits in the corner of Georgia where the armies fought through in 1863: Chickamauga was a few miles away, and Ringgold Gap was a rearguard action fought here that November.
