The old hotel on Bluff Mountain

Tennessee · USA · Cemetery

The hotel was popular in the 1920s. A couple of hundred feet off the trail to the bluffs there is a cemetery, and it goes back to the 1790s.

Figures, voices and a sense of dread are reported at the site of the old hotel on Bluff Mountain above Sevierville, Tennessee.

An update filed in October 2003 supplies the part almost nobody knows. A few hundred feet off the trail leading up to the bluffs there is an old cemetery, and the burials in it date back to the 1790s.

That is very early for these mountains. The Smokies were Cherokee country, and the first white settlements in this valley were being made at exactly that time, in defiance of treaty lines.

The hotel itself was popular in the 1920s, when the mountains were being discovered by visitors, shortly before the national park was created and whole communities were bought out and moved off the land.

The graves are older than everything else on the mountain.

The trail is public and the cemetery should be treated as a burial ground.
