The Brown Mountain Lights
North Carolina · USA · Haunted site
Seen from two overlooks on the Parkway. One account has them as torches carried by women searching the battlefield for their husbands.
The Brown Mountain Lights can be seen from two separate places along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, and they are among the most investigated phenomena in the United States.
One account holds that two Native nations fought a battle here, and that at night, when it was safe, the women went out with torches to look for their husbands among the dead. The lights are the torches.
Another version, told locally for generations, involves a search for a man who never came home.
The lights themselves are real and are not in dispute. They have been seen since at least the 1800s, they were investigated by the United States Geological Survey twice, in 1913 and 1922, and the official explanations, train headlights and brush fires, have never satisfied the people who live under the mountain.
They are still reported, and researchers still come.
The overlooks are on the public parkway and the lights are seen after dark.
