The Biltmore Hotel at Coral Gables in Florida is a landmark building with a complicated past. Among its earlier uses it served as a veterans' hospital, which is where most of what is reported traces back to.

Construction workers on the renovation were uneasy in the building, and the accounts from that period are the usual ones for a large historic property: objects moving, and sounds with no source.

The report that has stayed in circulation comes from a receptionist who works at the hotel and lives nearby. She got into the lift and pressed nothing. The lift took her to a floor that was not in use at the time.

Staff call that floor the Bridal floor, and a death is said to have occurred on it.

The Biltmore is a working hotel and one of the grandest buildings in south Florida. A lift that selects its own floor is the kind of fault an engineer would want to look at, and the fact that it chose an unoccupied one is why the receptionist has kept telling the story.
