Late at night in this old gymnasium at Bessie, Oklahoma, footsteps are heard on the stage, and everyone who describes them says the same thing: they sound like something moving on four legs.

There are cold spots through the building.

Stay long enough and a man is seen: a long black trench coat, a large black top hat, and a long brownish black beard.

That description belongs to nothing in twentieth century Oklahoma. A top hat and a full beard place him in the 1800s at the latest, and the town was not settled until the land runs of the 1890s.

Investigation of the old gym followed, and the rest of the account came out of it.

A figure that specific and that anachronistic is either somebody's memory of a real person or somebody's idea of what a ghost should look like.
