Paul Morphy beat every chess player alive and then stopped playing. He was born in this house and he died in it.

The house on Chartres Street in New Orleans is named for two of its occupants, but the figure most often reported in it is a third.

Paul Morphy was born here. At twenty one he went to Europe and beat every serious chess player in the world, several of them without sight of the board, and then came home and gave the game up entirely. He spent the rest of his life in this city, increasingly withdrawn and increasingly unwell, and he died in the house in 1884.

The original account gets his name wrong and attributes a remark about American genius to Dickens. The remark is usually credited elsewhere and the spelling should be Morphy, but the underlying claim, that he was one of the most extraordinary minds this country produced, is not disputed by anybody who knows the game.
