A miner was killed by an explosion in a mine near here. According to the account there was not enough of him left to bury properly, and it is from that failure of burial that the tradition grows: he was said to walk the gulch afterwards.

The encounter that fixed the story dates from 1918 and comes with names attached, which is rare for a report of this kind. Dorothy Peryam, her first husband Horace Quivey, her brother John and his wife Eda were camped in the area. The men were marking timber for the Forest Service. It was dusk and they had built their campfire, and Dorothy and John were standing close to it when what they described happened.

Named witnesses, a stated year, and a documented reason for the party to be there put this well above the standard mountain ghost story. The gulch is remote country and the town of Battle is gone.
