A small girl is seen on this estate at Adairsville, Georgia, usually in the Adair house, and she turns the attic lights on and off.

The staff leave toys up there for her. They put them in one place at the end of the day and find them somewhere else in the morning.

That is a deliberate, repeated experiment run by people who work in the building, which is more than most sites in this archive can say.

The estate has a genuine and unhappy history. Godfrey Barnsley built an Italianate manor and gardens here for his wife Julia in the 1840s. She died before it was finished. He carried on building. The family lost everything in the Civil War, when Union troops looted the house, and the roof was taken off by a tornado in 1906. The manor has stood as a ruin ever since.

The estate is now a resort and the ruins and gardens are open.
