The lifts at the Baker

Two men were down in the old laundry rooms when word came that the boss was on his way. One made it into the lift.

The Baker Hotel at Mineral Wells, Texas is an enormous fourteen storey resort hotel, built in 1929 for people coming to take the mineral waters, and it has stood mostly empty for decades.

The account concerns two young men who were in the basement, in what used to be the laundry rooms, talking to the women who worked there.

Word came that their boss was on his way down to check on them. The first man jumped into the lift.

The second was caught in the closing door and killed.

What people report by the lifts at night comes from that.

The hotel was the largest building in any small town in America when it opened, with a swimming pool on the roof and a spa in the basement, and the whole town was built on the water.

It has been under restoration and is not open.
