Averill Stand in Wilmington, Vermont was built in 1787 and served for many years as the stagecoach stop between Bennington and Brattleboro, on what is now Route 9. The Averill family ran the stand, along with the tavern and inn, and gave the place its name.

The family cemetery is on a small plot next to the old pasture, and it holds many of the people who lived in the house.

One of them is Lavina Field Averill, who is believed to have died in childbirth in the building. She is the presence most often identified in the accounts, and what is attributed to her is domestic and protective in character rather than frightening: items moved, and on several occasions objects placed where somebody would find them.

A coaching inn on a mountain road is a particular kind of building. For decades it was the place where strangers stopped, ate, slept and moved on, while one family stayed and buried its own in the field beside it. The house has outlived the coaching road by two hundred years.
