Two claims circulate. One concerns a death from the balcony, and it is not documented and is not repeated here. The other is that Al Capone had tunnels dug beneath the building running towards Fox Lake.

On the tunnels: the Chain O'Lakes district genuinely was a resort area for Chicago's criminal organisations in the 1920s and 1930s, and Capone had real connections in this part of Lake County. Tunnels are claimed under half the old buildings in northern Illinois and almost none of them exist.
