Someone comes in the front door of this desert school and is not in the hall. On windless days the swings move by themselves.

Amboy sits on Route 66 in the Mojave, and the school there is about as isolated as a school gets.

What teachers and pupils describe is the sound of someone coming in through the front door. When they look out into the hall from the classroom there is nobody there.

On the back playground the swings move on days with no wind, which in that country is worth stating carefully: the Mojave is rarely still, and the accounts specify the days when it is.

In the gym at night, while students are playing basketball, objects change position.

Amboy is effectively a ghost town with a handful of residents, kept alive by the highway and the salt works. A school in a place like that has a very small number of witnesses, which cuts both ways.
