The lighthouse stands on the Civil War’s largest prison camp — a keeper’s wife and a Confederate soldier are said to walk.
Point Lookout Lighthouse in Maryland rises on the site of the Civil War’s largest prison camp, where thousands died. It is often called America’s most haunted lighthouse. Ann Davis, the first keeper’s wife, who died in the lantern room, is said to appear at the top of the stairs in a blue skirt and white blouse, and rangers tell of a Confederate soldier glimpsed in rear-view mirrors. A paranormal investigator counted 24 spirits in the house in 1980.
