Old Charleston Jail
South Carolina · USA · Prison
A jail where pirates and Lavinia Fisher awaited the gallows. She is said to haunt it still.
The Old Charleston Jail on Magazine Street was built in 1802 and remained in use until 1939. John and Lavinia Fisher were held here, and Lavinia, hanged in 1820, is the jail's best known ghost. The institution also held pirates awaiting hanging as well as participants in Denmark Vesey's planned slave uprising of 1822, and during the Civil War prisoners of war were kept here. The long history of executions, harsh conditions and death lies behind the reported hauntings. Source: Wikipedia.
