The Marshall House in Savannah, Georgia opened in 1851 and is the oldest hotel in the city still in operation. During the American Civil War the Union Army occupied the building in 1864 and 1865 and used it as a field hospital for wounded soldiers.

When the hotel was renovated at the end of the 1990s, workers found human remains beneath the floorboards on the ground floor. The site briefly became a crime scene, until it was realised that the ground floor had once been the hospital's operating room, and the bones most likely came from soldiers' amputated limbs. According to the account, the doctors were struck in 1864 by a harsh winter in which the frozen ground made it impossible to bury the many severed arms and legs, and their solution was to hide the remains under the floor.

The Marshall House has since gained a reputation for being haunted. Guests describe the spirits of amputated soldiers wandering emptily and aimlessly through the hotel. One of them has been seen in the lobby holding his missing arm, pleading with guests to help him find a surgeon. Others have complained of a terrible stench, like rotting meat, of taps turning themselves on in the middle of the night, and of children heard running and laughing in the empty corridors. The fourth floor is the most active, and room 414 is the one with the most reported sightings, an elegant hotel with a bloody war history hidden in its floors.
