Castillo de San Marcos
Florida · USA · Fortress
The oldest masonry fort in the United States. An officer's wife is said to have been walled in alive.
Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine was built between 1672 and 1695 and is the oldest masonry fort on the mainland of the United States, raised in the local stone coquina and never taken by force of arms. The fort was used as a military prison and held, among others, the Seminole leader Osceola. The haunting centres on a legend about the wife of commandant Martí and captain Abela, who according to the story were walled in alive, after which a sealed chamber is said to have been found long afterwards. Visitors report the smell of sulphur and perfume, the boom of cannon and apparitions of soldiers along the ramparts. Source: Wikipedia.
