Alcatraz, the Rock, is the notorious island in San Francisco Bay that housed a federal maximum security prison between 1934 and 1963. Before that the island was a military fortification and military prison. Today Alcatraz is counted among the most haunted places in America.

Most infamous is cell block D, the Treatment Unit, with 42 cells, five of which were known as the Hole, where prisoners could be held for up to nineteen days in total darkness and isolation. Cell 14D, lined with steel and without sink or toilet, is said to be around ten degrees colder than the rest of the block. Investigations using thermal cameras have documented cold spots moving through the cell house in patterns that do not match the air circulation, and that sometimes appear to take human form and travel from cell to cell.

Guards in cell block D described a man in nineteenth century clothing, perhaps the same figure seen at the warden's Christmas party. Decades after the time of Al Capone, banjo music has been heard from his old cell and in the shower room, where he used to practise. Staff have reported unexplained crashes, running footsteps, eerie screams, cell doors slamming shut on their own, moaning, rattling chains and a constant sense of being watched.

Today Alcatraz is one of the most visited destinations in San Francisco, an island where the horrors of captivity seem to have etched themselves into the cold concrete walls.
