Cadets watched a door slam and then realised it was padlocked. It could not have been open to slam in the first place.
Hickman Hall at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri produced a set of accounts from the cadets living in it.
What they describe at night are grey figures that appear to float through doors.
The incident everyone repeats is different in kind, and it is the one worth recording. A door slammed shut. Only afterwards did they notice that the door was padlocked, which meant it could not have been standing open, which meant there was nothing there to slam.
An update from April 2007 adds an account from a visitor concerning a year in 1995 or 1996 when every room in the building was affected.
Military academy cadets are a specific kind of witness: they live in the building under discipline, they are not free to wander, and they have a strong incentive not to be the one making things up.
