Nineveh Falls stood at a crossing of the Hammonasset River, on the line between Killingworth and Madison in Connecticut.

The account holds that a young Native woman and a young warrior are both present here. Before colonisation, the warrior went to war with the men of his village.

One thing needs saying plainly. Stories of this shape, the Indian maiden waiting at a waterfall, were written in enormous numbers by white New Englanders in the nineteenth century, and almost none of them come from the peoples they claim to describe. They were used to make a landscape feel ancient and empty at exactly the moment its original inhabitants were being pushed off it.

The Hammonasset people were real, this river carries their name, and their history is better served by the record than by this.
