The hall was built over a paupers' cemetery. When they dug in the 1980s they found what was still down there.

Cincinnati Music Hall is one of the great American concert buildings, and it stands on ground that held a paupers' cemetery, along with burials from an orphanage and an asylum that had occupied the site.

That is not folklore. When excavation work was carried out in the 1980s, human remains were found in quantity, and more have turned up during later work.

The people buried there were the poor of the city, put into the ground without markers because nobody was paying for one.

The accounts come almost entirely from the staff who clean the building at night. One maintenance man was riding the service lift at the back of the hall when he heard people whispering at him, angrily.

The hall is a working venue, home to the symphony and the opera, and it is open to the public.
