Neighbours in Wallingford hear music and see the gym lit. The police go in and find everything switched off. A tornado destroyed the school that stood.

Neighbours of the Moses Y Beach school in Wallingford, Connecticut report hearing music at night and seeing the lights of the gym on. When the police go in to investigate, both the music and the lights have gone off abruptly.

The explanation offered locally is a dance. The story holds that a prom or homecoming was due on the night a tornado destroyed the high school that stood on this ground before the elementary school.

The tornado is real. It struck Wallingford in August 1878, tore through the centre of the town and killed around thirty four people, and it remains one of the deadliest tornadoes in New England's recorded history. The school it destroyed was a real building.

Whether a dance was planned for that night is another matter and no source we have seen establishes it.

The school is in use, and the accounts come from the houses around it rather than from inside.
