Curtiss Mansion

The house Glenn Curtiss built at Miami Springs. The story about how he died in it is not what happened.

Glenn H Curtiss built his mansion on Deer Run at Miami Springs, Florida, while Miami was still becoming a city. Curtiss was one of the founding figures of American aviation and a genuine historical heavyweight.

The story told locally is that he loved children so much that he turned half the mansion into a nursery, that he learned his wife had had an abortion, and that she burned the house down with him inside it in revenge.

None of that happened. Curtiss died in 1930 in Buffalo, of complications following an appendix operation. He was not killed in his house and his wife did not burn it down.

The house did suffer serious fire damage, decades later, which is very likely where the story found its raw material.

What is reported at the mansion is lights going on and off, figures playing tennis, and screaming at night. The building has since been restored and is used for events.
