Off an abandoned road in the woods at Middlebury, Connecticut stands something that no ghost story is needed to make strange. Built into the hillside is a village of small stone houses, three to five feet high, complex and carefully detailed. Some are A framed and others follow more conventional shapes. They look gutted, almost condemned. Inside there are elaborate room structures and staircases. Narrow paths lead up through the trees toward them. The whole site is overgrown.

Set into a rock nearby is what visitors call the throne, a life sized stone chair with symbols cut around it. The rule attached to it is that anyone who sits in it will die within seven years. That part is folklore and should be treated as such.

What is not folklore is the village itself. Somebody spent an enormous amount of labour building it, and the explanations offered locally, from a fairy obsession to a private folly, have never been settled. It remains one of the most visited and least explained sites in Connecticut.
