The third floor bedroom

Florida · United States · House

The house was built in 1918. Their daughter caught something infectious and was nursed on the third floor, away from everybody else.

This house at Orange City, Florida was built in 1918, long before it became a funeral home, and the third floor room is associated with the daughter of the family who built it.

She caught an infectious disease of the kind that was common then, and she was nursed in that bedroom to keep her away from the rest of the household.

Isolating a sick child upstairs was the only tool a family had. Antibiotics did not exist, the 1918 influenza pandemic was killing people across Florida as this house was going up, and diphtheria, scarlet fever and typhoid were ordinary childhood dangers.

A child spending her last weeks alone at the top of her own home, hearing her family below, is what this room actually holds.

That it later became a funeral home is a coincidence the building did not choose.

The premises are a working business.
