The Kaskaskia Hotel
Illinois · United States · Hotel
A young woman went off the top floor in the twenties. Six storeys. You hear her heels through the building at all hours.
This account comes from someone who worked at the Kaskaskia Hotel in La Salle, Illinois and saw several things there.
In the 1920s a young woman went off the top floor of the building. It is six storeys.
How she came to fall is told more than one way and none of the versions is documented, so nothing is asserted about it here.
What is reported is the sound of her heels, throughout the building, during the day as well as at night.
Heels are a good detail. They are unmistakable on a hard floor, they identify a period and a person, and a hotel corridor is exactly where you expect to hear them and exactly where staff would notice when there is nobody in it.
The Kaskaskia was the grand hotel of the Illinois Valley when it opened in 1912, and it has been through decline, closure and restoration since.
It is in use.
