The witness lift
Indiana · United States · Haunted site
A separate lift was built to move court witnesses between floors. The story is that one of them never arrived.
When this building in Indianapolis was going up, a separate lift was installed to move witnesses between floors, away from the public.
The story told about it is that in the 1960s a witness was being taken up to court in a Mafia case, and was shot in the lift by one of his police escorts, who was a hired killer in a uniform.
No record supports it. A witness murdered by a police impersonator inside a county building would be one of the most notorious crimes in the history of this city, and there is nothing.
What is real is the lift and the reason for it. Witness security was a genuine problem in American courts in that period, protection programmes were new, and separate circulation for witnesses was designed into courthouses precisely because people were being got at.
The building is a working courthouse and government office.
