During the conversion of the old department store into a law library, a security guard heard a girl crying in the lift shaft.

The building on Wilshire Boulevard near Vermont in Los Angeles was built in 1929 as a department store, and it is one of the great Art Deco interiors in the country. It is now part of a law school and the selling floors have been converted into a library.

The store was built for customers arriving by motor car, with its grand entrance at the car park rather than the street, and it was the last word in luxury retail for half a century before the neighbourhood changed around it.

It was damaged in the 1992 unrest and closed shortly after, and the law school's decision to restore rather than gut it is the reason the interior survives.
