A First World War military base and a tuberculosis hospital in the Second, at Deming, New Mexico. One building is left and the tunnels beneath the town.

The site at Deming, New Mexico served as a military base during the First World War and as a tuberculosis hospital during the Second. All but one of its buildings have been demolished because of their condition.

The remaining building is the one visitors come for. Witnesses report noises from the upper floor and lights near the fountain after dark.

Beneath it there was a tunnel system running from the north western part of town to the south eastern side, ending at the airport. All of it has caved in.

A claim circulates locally that a group used the site in the mid 1970s for animal sacrifice. It has no source behind it beyond repetition, and it belongs to a genre of rumour attached to abandoned buildings across the American southwest in that decade. We list it as rumour rather than as history.

The more mundane truth is that the place has been a spot for local teenagers to drink for many years, which accounts for a good deal of what is found there and probably for some of what is reported.
