Drivers taking Greenbriar Road slowly at night outside Jacksonville, Florida report a ball of light that appears from nowhere and follows the car. It bobs along behind, sometimes rising to hover above the vehicle. What it never does, in any account, is pass on the road.

The reports were numerous enough that the Sheriff's Department took the unusual step of dispatching scientists to investigate.

No explanation was found.

That is a rare outcome. Most ghost lights turn out to be distant headlights refracted along a straight road, swamp gas, or reflections off wet tarmac, and a serious investigation usually says so. Here it did not.

Local tradition connects the light to the death of a young person on the road, which is the explanation attached to almost every ghost light in America and the least interesting part of this one.

The road is public and the phenomenon, whatever it is, has been reported over a long enough period and by enough drivers to have outlived several attempts to account for it.
