The Ute put their women and children on rafts and pushed them out onto the water for safety while they fought on the shore. Then the storm came.

The Ute called this lake Spirit Lake, and the story of how it got that name is the reason.

Attacked without warning, and afraid for their families, the Ute men put the women and children onto rafts and pushed them out onto the water where they would be out of reach.

The fighting went on among the trees and along the shore. While it did, a storm came up and blew the rafts apart.

Those on them drowned.

After that the Ute would not camp by the lake, and did not go on the water.

Grand Lake is the largest natural lake in Colorado, over eight thousand feet up at the headwaters of the Colorado River, and it is bitterly cold and deep. A storm coming down off the divide can turn it in minutes.

What is reported there is mist over the water and voices.

The lake is public and the town beside it is a resort.
