The last stronghold of the Confederacy on the North Carolina coast. A police officer driving out to the fort at night stopped to offer a man a lift.

Fort Fisher at Kure Beach, North Carolina was the last major Confederate stronghold to fall, and it is reported by both Union and Confederate dead.

The figure named is General W H C Whiting, the Confederate officer commanding the fort. He was wounded in the final assault, taken prisoner, and died of his wounds in captivity.

The account most often retold comes from a Kure Beach police officer on duty. Driving toward the fort at night, he noticed a man walking along the side of the road and pulled over to give him a lift.

What happened next is why the story is still told locally, and it is better for coming from someone whose job was to notice people on that road at that hour.

The fort is a state historic site with a museum and is open to visitors.
