The TNT area, Point Pleasant
West Virginia · United States · Bridge
The Mothman was reported around this former federal munitions dump on the Ohio River through 1966 and 1967, by dozens of people.
The former TNT dump outside Point Pleasant, West Virginia is where the Mothman sightings clustered.
Between November 1966 and December 1967 dozens of people in and around the town reported a winged figure, described as roughly man shaped, very large, with red eyes. Some encounters were on the roads around Point Pleasant. Most were near the old munitions area along the Ohio River, a site of concrete igloos and abandoned bunkers left over from the war.
The sightings ended when the Silver Bridge across the Ohio collapsed in December 1967, killing forty six people, and the two have been linked in the retelling ever since.
That linkage is where the folklore took over from the reports. What is documented is a great many ordinary people describing the same thing over thirteen months, and a bridge that failed because of a single cracked eyebar.
