Devil's Hollow, Cedar Canyon Road
Indiana · United States · Bridge
An old woman lived alone on the hill above this Indiana bridge, and told a friend that local children broke her things and looked in at her windows.
There is a bridge near the hollow on Cedar Canyon Road outside Fort Wayne, Indiana, and a great many stories attached to it: a headless horseman, a couple killed when a motorcycle went over the bridge, hangings.
The version told locally as the real one is smaller and worse.
An old woman lived alone in a house up on the hill. She told a friend that children came onto her property, broke things, crept up to the windows and looked in at her, and generally made her life difficult. She said so more than once.
What happened to her afterwards is what the hollow is supposed to be about.
That pattern, an isolated woman harassed until something happened, and then remembered as the frightening thing rather than the frightened one, is the origin of a great many so called witch legends in rural America.
