Titicut at Bridgewater, Massachusetts was a Wampanoag summer camping ground and burial place long before anything else stood here.

The history attached to it is among the ugliest in New England. Metacomet, whom the English called King Philip, led the Wampanoag and their allies in the war of 1675 and 1676. When he was killed, his body was drawn and quartered on the orders of the colonial authorities. The pieces were distributed and displayed across Massachusetts, and his head was set on a pole at Plymouth, where it stayed for twenty years. The stated intention was to deny him any rest.
