A couple went to see the aircraft and found a man sitting inside one of them. He smiled and waved. They assumed the museum had hired actors.
A couple visiting the aircraft collection at this site in St Petersburg, Florida described what happened in their own words.
They went to see the planes. Inside one of the bombers a man was sitting. He smiled at them and waved, and she told her fiancé to take a photograph.
They thought it was a nice touch, men dressed in period uniform to bring the display to life.
One detail in their account cannot be right: they name the aircraft as a B52, which is a Cold War jet far too large for a site like this. It was almost certainly a wartime bomber, which fits everything else they describe.
What matters is that they were not frightened at the time, and did not understand what they had seen until afterwards. That pattern, recognition coming late, runs through a great many of the strongest accounts in this archive.
