An old house once stood along the interstate at Black Oak, near Gary, Indiana. It had been a speakeasy and a house where women worked.

What people reported was a sequence. First a car pulling in. Then men going into the basement, where the owner of the place was shot.

Upstairs a woman in red was seen, crying, and reaching out.

The geography explains a good deal. Gary and the towns around it sat between Chicago and the Indiana line, and during Prohibition the whole district was worked over by the organisations running drink out of Chicago. Roadhouses along the highways here were exactly what this one is described as, and the violence attached to them was real.

The sequence, car then men then basement, is more like a memory than a haunting.

The house is gone and the site is beside a major road.
