Two workers died in an explosion at the Kansas munitions plant in the late 1980s, and the stories began when production restarted for the Gulf War.

The army ammunition plant at Parsons, Kansas closed for more than two years after an explosion in the late 1980s killed two workers, a man and a woman. Production restarted in 1990, just in time for the Persian Gulf War, but part of the building stayed shut.

The layout that followed says a great deal about the work. To stop one accident setting off another, the work areas were placed several hundred yards apart and joined by unpainted wooden ramps left to the wasps. Inspectors, supervisors and parts managers moved between them on old bicycles with wire baskets, ringing thumb bells at every intersection and doorway to warn whoever might be coming the other way.

As the line turned out cluster bombs, each one packed with two hundred and two smaller bombs, the rumours started among the people riding those ramps. They centre on the closed section and on the two who did not come out of it.
