Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles was built in 1924 and has since been the scene of a long series of suicides, murders and mysterious deaths, which has made it one of the most notorious and haunted hotels in America. Of roughly 80 deaths at the hotel, 16 remain unexplained.

The place is also tied to serial killers. Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker, lived at the Cecil during his killing spree in the mid 1980s, when he murdered at least thirteen people.

The best known case is that of Elisa Lam. In 2013 surveillance footage spread showing the young Canadian student behaving strangely in the hotel lift. Nineteen days later guests complained of low water pressure and a strange taste in the taps, after which the body of Elisa Lam was found floating in one of the rooftop water tanks, naked with her clothes drifting beside her. The coroner ruled the death an accidental drowning, with her bipolar disorder as a contributing factor.

Paranormal investigators have carried out countless examinations at the hotel and captured unexplained sounds, sudden drops in temperature and shadow figures. Many connect the eerie experiences specifically to the upper floors and to the lift shaft where Elisa Lam was last seen. Together with the many real tragedies, this has cemented the reputation of the Cecil as one of the darkest places in Los Angeles, a building where misfortune seems to have stayed in the walls for a century, and which has inspired both documentaries and horror series.
