Bourbon Orleans Hotel in the French Quarter of New Orleans is counted among the ten most haunted hotels in the United States according to USA Today. It is said to be haunted by children and nuns from a former convent and orphanage, as well as by a solitary ghostly dancer.

The building has a long history. The Orleans Theatre and the magnificent Orleans Ballroom, designed by Henry Latrobe, were completed between 1815 and 1817. In 1881 the Sisters of the Holy Family bought the former ballroom and converted the building into a convent and school for African American girls, St. Marys Academy, along with an orphanage for girls. The property was sold in 1964.

The hotel is said to house more than twenty spirits. Among them are young girls who died in a yellow fever epidemic, a pair of nuns who died on the site, a nun who took her own life in room 644, and a dancing woman in the ballroom. The famous Orleans Ballroom is home to a lone ghostly dancer, seen whirling beneath the chandelier. Several guests have also reported rustling and a figure hiding behind the drapes, even though no window is open and nobody is there.

A Confederate soldier, known simply as the man, is also said to haunt the sixth and third floors of this elegant hotel built on layers of New Orleans history.
